The Queen of Chiraa in the Sunyani West District, Nana Yeboaa Pene II, has appealed to the District Assembly and Non-governmental organisations to construct toilets for the boarding girls at the Chiraa Senior High School.
She was unhappy that the just completed girls’ dormitory in the school did not have the facilities, a situation which made it difficult for the students to attend nature’s call especially at night.
Some of the girls had to walk long distances to the school’s main toilet to ease themselves at night, Nana Pene II, stated when Mr Martin Obeng, the District Chief Executive paid a courtesy call on the Chief of Chiraa Barima Minta Afari II, and his subjects.
This unpleasant situation, the Queen said endangered the lives of the girls as the boys dormitory was close to the main toilet in the school.
Nana Pene II said the dormitory required about six seater water closet toilet for the girls and that would also help to improve on hygiene.
She expressed concern about increased teenage pregnancy, which she said was impeding girl-child education in the communities.
Barima Afari II said the community had enacted a bye-law to ward-off teenagers from straying at night but enforcement was the problem.
This, the chief explained was because traditional rulers had no more powers over citizens due to certain international human right conventions the country was a signatory to.
Mr Obeng thanked the chiefs and people of the district for their support during his confirmation and stressed that the Assembly would ensure equitable distribution of projects in the communities.
The DCE was accompanied by almost all the Heads of Department and Agencies in the district.
