The Chinese government is set to deliver 4 patrol boats to the Ghana Navy by the end of this month, July 2017.
The Chinese have also pledged to provide military equipment to boost bilateral defense cooperation. This includes four vehicles mounted with machine guns, and a 120,000-round of amour.
This was announced by Defence Minister, Dominic Nitiwul, who told that the patrol boats will help Ghana efficiently guard its coastline.
“The biggest problem with us is that, the navy is down with boats so our coastline is not as rigorously guarded as we have wished especially the eastern sides. So we appealed to them and they decided to help us with boats. So they decided to fulfill that promise. When the Vice President went there, he reminded them about it. By this month, the patrol boats will be here and then they will be sending six people to train our navy on the usage of the patrol boats.”
The Chinese government has been heavily criticized by Ghanaians for supporting some government institutions in the country.
The Chinese Ambassador to Ghana in June 2017, presented GHc 10,000 and some office equipment to the Attorney General’s office, to support an event.
Some Chinese businessmen also donated the sum of GHc50, 000 to the Ghana Police service
Some Ghanaians claimed that the donations were a subtle by the Chinese to influence the Ghana government’s fight against illegal mining which some Chinese were heavily engaged in.
