South American champions Chile beat European Champions Portugal 3-0 on penalties to make it to the final of the FIFA Confederations Cup.
La Roja started the semi-final game at the Kazan Arena on a slow pace as A Selecçao led by Cristiano Ronaldo dictated pace in the first 15 minutes.
But the Chileans took over by shading possession 54 per cent at the end of the first half, though nothing by way of goal could separate the two sides.
The score remained the same but not without close chances to both sides with Chile ending the extra time the stronger of the two. Arturo Vidal’s strike hit the woodwork and a follow-up also went off the bar to save the Europeans two minutes to the end of proceedings.
Brimming with confidence, the Chileans – from goalkeeper to striker – controlled the penalties.
Manchester City’s Claudio Bravo became the hero as he saved all of Portugal’s three kicks including Ricardo Quaresma’s and Nani’s.
Vidal and Alexis Sanchez were among the scorers for Chile, who will face Germany or Mexico in Sunday’s final.
