Chelsea Welcomes Ghana Defender After Injury Spell

According to Chelsea TV latest training ground report, Ghana defender Abdul Baba Rahman returned to a full training session at Cobham on Tuesday, September 5.

Baba Rahman who suffered a serious knee injury during the African Cup of Nations tournament early this year, joined his colleague players who were not called up by their respective national teams during this FIFA-mandated break, to train for Chelsea’s Saturday’s match against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium.

Photos from the training session showed Rahman alongside the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Danny Drinkwater and new signing Kylian Hazard at Cobham.

Rahman is currently on loan to Schalke 04, but Chelsea decided against sending him out to the German side to allow him complete his recovery and work on his fitness having been away since January.

And from what was seen from his first training session with The Blues on Tuesday, the Ghana international has improved tremendously. His performance are clear signs that he could return to full fitness sooner than expected and perhaps play a part in Chelsea’s campaign this term.

Rahman fractured his left knee meniscus and some parts of his anterior cruciate ligament on Tuesday, January 17 while playing at Ghana’s opening match against Uganda during the 2017 AFCON.

The Ghanaian defender was stretchered off the field 39 minutes into the match which saw Ghana beat Uganda 1-0. The injury had truncated his loan deal with Schalke who are still interested in his services.

Baba Rahman began his career at Dreams FC. He currently plays as a left back for German side Schalke 04 on loan from English club Chelsea and for the Ghana national team. The 22-year-old left-back joined Chelsea in 2015 from Augsburg but has made just 15 league appearances for the Blues and failed to impress Antonio Conte upon his appointment last summer.

He was therefore omitted from both of Chelsea’s Premier League and Champions League squads. Baba as he is fondly called, is now faced with the hard task of proving his fitness so as to be considered next January.
