Panelists on 3FM’s Sunrise Show, Friday, June 16 underscored the need to ensure transparency and communication in relationships to prevent hurts and antagonism between partners.
They were discussing the issue of trust and infidelity in marriages.
The sensitive issue of trust in relationship has been reignited following the ruling of an Accra High Court in the bitter divorce between footballer Nii Odartey Lamptey and wife Gloria Appiah.
Touching on ignoring early warnings, counsellor Efia, known in private life as Rita Cudjoe, argued that while the situation is painful, it is likely that certain red flags may have been ignored.
According to her, we “need to look at some of the causes of these things because footballers and businessmen usually leave their wives alone for very long periods and some of the women cannot abstain from sex.”
She maintains “most of these issues boil down to attitudes” adding that “Nii Odartey Lamptey certainly saw certain red flags during the courtship, but may have over looked them; probably to give his woman the benefit of the doubt. Sometimes we see partners cheating or exhibiting certain traits but we over look them”.
Renowned counsellor and life coach, Kweku Adumatta describes the realization of betrayal of trust as devastating, heart breaking and damaging, adding that the foundations of relationships are crucial.
“If care is not taken, the man could lose track of his thinking and even contemplate suicide. But we need some answers from the couple. This is because we don’t know if they agreed for the wife to go outside their marriage to get pregnant, otherwise it is deception.”
Some listeners also called into the show to express their views.
The Accra High Court on Wednesday June 14 presided over by Justice Cecilia Don-Chebe Agbevey put finality to the bitter divorce battle between the estranged lovers which had lingered on since 2013.
Gloria Appiah failed in an attempt to gain 50% share of his assets after the Accra High Court ruled that having three children out of wedlock is an “adulterous” life.
