The Gender and Social Protection Minister Otiko Afisa Djaba has underscored the need for women to be treated with respect.
Ms. Djaba speaking on The Pulse on the Joy News channel on Multi TV asked Ghanaians to forgive her over the fracas between herself and the Northern regional NPP chairman, Bugri Naabu.
According to her, she felt disrespected by the action by the fire brand politician.
Mr Naabu on Friday May 5 led a group of angry women to disrupt a meeting organised by Otiko Djaba. The group who accompanied him vandalised some properties. He described the meeting held by the Gender Minister as “illegal” because he was not notified about it.
But the Gender Minister denied the claims insisting that she tried reaching Mr. Naabu but he was not reachable. The Minister stressed that, ‘’it is a lesson for us to understand that we need to respect each other…We need to respect women in this country and 60 years on, we are talking about affirmative action-Its important that we respect women…I am a woman and the same respect that you want someone accord to your female person in your life, you should accord to me.
I felt disrespected and I feel it on behalf of all women because I know that if it was a woman, he wouldn’t do that.’’ Madam Djaba added, “Because I am a woman he thinks he can bully me and get away with it. But people of Ghana, what is not right is not right.’’
She said she did not understand why Mr. Naabu would ‘’make those tales and all the other things that came with it.
It was totally out of order, there was no need for him to do that but I apologise to my party members and the people of Ghana for what happened.’’
