Bayern Munich have continued their summer strengthening by signing Colombia captain James Rodriguez from Real Madrid.
James, 25, who moved to Madrid from Monaco in 2014 after winning the Golden Boot at that year’s FIFA World Cup, will arrive at the Allianz Arena on a two-year loan deal, although Bayern have an option to buy the attacking midfielder.
Rodriguez joins Corentin Tolisso, Serge Gnabry, Niklas Süle and Sebastian Rudy as the new faces in Carlo Ancelotti’s squad.
“We’re very happy about this transfer,” said Bayern’s executive board chairman, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. “James Rodriguez was Carlo Ancelotti’s wish after both worked successfully together in Madrid. James is a versatile player, is dangerous in front of goal, creates plenty of goals and takes a good set-piece. We’ve increased the quality of the squad significantly with this transfer.”
James made just 13 La Liga starts last term as he fell behind Isco and Marco Asensio in first-team boss Zinedine Zidane’s thinking.
The pair have already worked effectively together with James scoring 17 times and setting up a further 18 in 46 appearances during the Bayern boss’ tenure at Madrid between 2013 and 2015.
James becomes the second Colombian to play for the Bavarian giants; Adolfo “El Tren” Valencia turned out for Bayern between 1993 and 1995.
