Head of Communications at the Electoral Commission (EC), Eric Kofi Dzakpasu, has clarified that the vice presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia was never verified at his home.
Speaking on Starr Today with Bernard Nasara Saibu, Tuesday, Mr. Dzakpasu said the allegation that Dr. Bawumia was verified at his Walewale residence was not brought to the notice of the Commission and that, “…all that we knew was that they verified him outside …some distance away from the exhibition centre and certainly not in a house.”
Pushed to make a definite statement on whether the NPP’s running mate in the December 7 elections has not been verified in his home, he said “…yeah, there was no indication that it was in anybody’s house, but it was outside the exhibition centre.”
Earlier Tuesday, the EC released a statement signed by its Deputy Chairperson in charge of operations, Amadu Sulley revealing that Dr. Bawumia was “verified outside an exhibition centre.”
This statement follows the receipt of an investigative report from the three-member committee set up by the Northern Regional Directorate of the Commission to investigate the incident involving Ambrose Yobe an exhibition officer and Mumuni Latifa a verification officer, who allegedly verified Dr. Bawumia outside the exhibition centre.
The NPP has welcomed the committee’s report, describing it as total “vindication” of the economist.
“Our vindication in this case stems from the fact that the truth contained in our initial response to the spurious allegations put out by the NDC on 30th July, have been endorsed by the EC’s three-member committee and subsequent statement,” the Walewale branch of the party said.
