Renovation work on Ghana’s oldest multi-sports facility, the Azuma Nelson Sports Complex in Accra, will commence next week after years of neglect.
Sports Minister Isaac Asiama who revealed this said government has secured funding for the refurbishment of the facility which will see the complex transformed into a modern sports facility for sports development.
“We have gotten funding to renovate the place. It will be called Youth and Sports Centre. We have awarded the facility to a contractor and we shall cut sod next week. We will reconstruct the various building there, two bedroom apartments so that various national teams can camp there,” he said.
The Minister added: “Azumah Nelson Sports Complex is well located [yet] we have left it for animals like snake to take over the facility”.
The facility has been in a very deplorable state and has seen very little maintenance by the state since it was built in the 1970s. It Originally known as the Kaneshie Sports Complex
