Assin South District Chief Executive Derick Owusu Ambrose has inaugurated the Muslim Council for the District in the Central Region.
The Council, which is tasked with the responsibility of ensuring coordination, development and welfare of the Muslim communities in the Assin South District, has representatives from the three main Muslim sects namely Ahmadiyya, Ahlusunna and Tijaniyya.
The nine-member Council has Sheikh Mustapha Adam Suleyman, Assin South Chief Imam of the Ahlusunna as its Chairman with Mr Issah Adam Cann, Assin South President of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission as secretary.
The rest of the members are Mallam Nuhu Ahmed, Assin South Chief Imam of the Tijaniyya, Saani Ibrahim, Ibrahim Nkansa, Imam Nuhu Adam, Harrison Ibrahim, Seidu Zakari and Alhassan Agyei Alock.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Council, Mr Owusu Ambrose tasked members to bring their experience to bear by making meaningful input on matters concerning the development of the District.
He also said the Assembly has designed Zongo Girls Child Education to promote education in Zongo communities within the district.
“Twenty girls have been enrolled in tertiary institutions which will follow by next year”.
He was hopeful that the Council would facilitate the promotion of the welfare of Muslims.
The Member of Parliament for Assin South Constituency, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, lauded the level of cooperation, unity and tolerance between Muslims and Christians in the District.
He commended the Muslims for the initiative and urged them to support the government to bring development to the people through the Zongo Development Fund (ZDF) to reduce the high level of poverty.
Sheikh Mustapha Adam Suleyman, Chairman of the Council, expressed gratitude to the Assembly and the MP for the important roles they played in the constitution of the Council.
He advised the Council members to exercise their duties diligently and live exemplary lives, adding: “Do not see this position as a means to amass wealth for yourselves.”
The Assembly together with the MP donated bags of rice, milk, oil and other foodstuff to the Muslims.
