Allegations that the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Member of Parliament (MP) for Suame Constituency in the Ashanti Region, Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu offered scholarship packages to members of Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) to kick against confirmation of Osei Assibey Antwi as Mayor of Kumasi has been withdrawn .
The accuser and elected member of Kwadaso Electoral Area, Kwame Kwakye alleged that the MP who is also ex-officio of the Assembly promised scholarship packages and other incentives to members who will reject the nominee for the position as a mayor.
According to Kwame Kwakye the MP’s aide and elected assembly member for Suame Ahenbronum, Maxwell Ofosu Boakye issued him ten thousand Ghana Cedis to vote “NO” during the confirmation.
He claimed Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu and immediate Mayor of the Assembly, Kojo Bonsu later met some members at Evandy Hostel promising to give an amount of three thousand to each member to vote against Assibey Antwi.
He also claimed that the MP met some members including him at Vandi Hostel near KNUST to carry their evil intent against the then nominee.
Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu however speaking on Nhyiria FM in Kumasi denied ever meeting any person or group of persons since he has nothing against the Mayor.
“Hon. Osei Assibey Antwi is not my competitor. What will be the benefit to me if he is rejected? We should be mindful not to peddle lies as politicians. It is balderdash”
Kwame Kwakye who was on a telephone confessed and clarified that he did not deal directly with the MP and subsequently withdrew the claim.
“Thank you for giving me this opportunity. Let me make my correction, Hon. Kyei Mensah-Bonsu did not meet Assembly members at Evandy Hostel. It was Kojo Bonsu rather. Second I have never said Hon. Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu bribed members to vote “NO”. That is also on record. Number three, it was his aide Maxwell who called me that some MPs in Kumasi do not support the nomination of Osei Assibey Antwi and I should lead a crusade against his nomination”
