A number of assembly members in the Sunyani West District assembly of the Brong Ahafo Region have been sacked ahead of the second leg of confirmation of the President’s nominee as District Chief Executive (DCE) for the area.
Those whose appointments have been revoked are mostly government appointments who were appointed onto the assembly but failed to back government’s decision.
Last week, the nominee failed to secure the mandatory two-thirds majority amidst violence that broke out at the area following a standoff between some assembly members and supporters of the nominee.
The situation saw police using teargas to disperse the irate supporters who were not enthused about the development because they said they were hoping a one-touch endorsement of the nominee.
Some of the appointees were alleged to have championed the rejection of the nominee which saw the Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Obiri Boahen demanding the appointments of such persons be revoked.
He accused the government appointees of showing bad faith by failing to endorse the president’s nominee for the area.
“They should revoke their appointments because they have betrayed the trust government has reposed in them and appointed them to the assembly. I think it will be justified to revoke their appointments before the next sitting to confirm the nominee”, he said.
Nana Obiri Boahen wondered why persons who should rather have fronted government’s interest be seen doing the reverse threatening to liaise with the appropriate authorities to have them removed from the assembly.
