As a way of giving back to his alma mater, Black Star’s captain Asamoah Gyan constructs a world class artificial pitch at the Accra Academy.
The Black Stars skipper on Thursday, 15th June, visited the school to inspect the progress of the ongoing construction. Speaking to the media, Gyan expressed happiness over the project, indicating that the work is almost done.
“As you can see, everything is almost done, we have just some finishing touches to do before we do the commissioning. I think they have done an incredible job… So I’m very happy for myself for what I have done.”

The multi-purpose AstroTurf which is expected to reach completion by the end of this year was started in March, 2015. The pitch reportedly stands at an estimated cost of $180, 000.
The multi-purposed Astro Turf when completed will comprise a 3,000 metre artificial turf which has been imported from Turkey, a tartan track, a changing room, an inner perimeter, and flood light. The facility will be fenced to prevent unauthorized usage.
In addition, Asamoah Gyan is expected to distribute football boots to the school for players to use on the pitch upon completion.
Asamoah Gyan cut sod for the construction of the Accra Academy Astroturf in February, 2015 when he paid a visit to the school, after returning from the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea.
Gyan who expressed appreciation for the warm reception he received then, promised to construct a standard artificial pitch for them. Some of his words during the 2015 visit:
We are one family and being an international star now the only thing I have to do is to give back to society so I decided to come to the school that made me what I am. I belong to the field and therefore I am going to organize and construct an astro turf – that is an artificial pitch – for the school so everyone can exhibit his skill.
Asamoah Gyan finished from Accra Academy School in 2002. It was during his days in the school that his football skills were harnessed by veteran coach of Ebusua Dwarfs, J. E Sarpong.
Since then, Gyan has recorded tremendous success in his football career. In addition to being Ghana’s all-time top scorer, he is currently Africa’s highest World Cup scorer. Just few days ago, the Black Stars Captain became the first Ghanaian player to hit the much treasured landmark 50-goal record for the Ghana National Team.
He is also set to receive an honorary doctorate Degree from The Alfred Noble University in Ukraine come July.
It is in the spirit these outstanding successes that Asamoah Gyan constructs the classy sports pitch for his alma mater, hoping that future football stars would be discovered therein, just the same way he was discovered.
