Army worms have invaded farm lands in the Nanumba North District of the Northern Region, destroying a number of farms in the process.
Some of the farmers told Citi News they could lose their farm produce and famine may occur in the area, if measures are not taken to address the problem.
” The worms are destroying our farms and we fear if the government does not come to our aid immediately, we could run into trouble. Some of us took loans from the financial institutions, and if the worms destroy the farm, we will be unable to pay back the loans. We are calling on the government to as a matter of urgency come to our aid to spray the farms for us; otherwise there may be famine in the district.”
“….Government should come and spray our farms for us. We are losing our crops and if nothing is done immediately we will be in trouble”, another farmer lamented.
Meanwhile, the District Director of Agric in the Nanumba North District, says the issue has been reported to his outfit and a report will be sent to Tamale for the necessary actions to be taken.
“….the reports have come to our office and it is all over the district. We are currently compiling the reports to know the number of acres affected so that we will send reports to Tamale for us to get chemicals to spray the farms.”
This development follows a similar one that occurred in Dormaa Ahenkro in the Brong Ahafo Region, where three hundred and twenty- four (324) farmers in the area were affected, and a total of 522 hectors of farmlands were infested representing 31.70 per cent of destruction.
