IT might now dawn on us as a people that the war we have waged on galamsey is far from over. At least we now have a fair idea of the kind of people we are dealing with and how far they [these galamseyers] are willing to go with their trade, even at the peril of their lives.
MANY of us thought that the directive from the presidency and the setting of task forces in the various galamsey communities would have at least compelled these nothing-but-nation-wreckers to abandon their destructive and illicit trade.
THOUGH we can handily say that we have made some progress since we begun this war, it is clear that some of the hardened Galamseyers only recoiled a bit and changed their modus operandi.
THE caving in of abandoned galamsey pits in gold mining communities with its associated deaths and injuries is a testament to the above point.
SEVERAL, others who were part of the galamsey team searching for gold, reports indicate, cannot be reached, while a rescue team is currently at the site looking for any survivors.
THE question, Today wants to ask therefore is: when will these galamseyers call it quit and stay alive from these pits-caving in related deaths?
TODAY would have thought that at least with these galamsey pits caving in and causing deaths of galamseyers, they would have learnt some lessons and abandoned their trade. But from the look of things it is obvious we need to keep the heat on them.
THIS is where Today believes we need to intensify our efforts in the fight against galamsey. It must be pointed out that it will not just stop by presidential directives as we have seen in recent times, with galamseyers defying the president’s orders and perpetuating their illegal activities.
WE have also proposed through this medium that government must change its tactics. This is in the light of the fact that galamseyers have since changed their tactics and are able to outwit the various anti-galamsey task forces to carry out their illicit trade.
WE must all understand that the galamsey fight is a worthy one, a cause for our survival and for posterity. And for that matter, it is imperative that we all join to see it to the end.
