The tensions in Somanya that escalated into a clash between angry residents and police, along with the setting on fire of a police car, also led to the escape of four suspected criminals in police custody.
A statement from the Police Service urged the public to assist in the recapture of the escaped suspects after assuring of the restoration of calm to the area.
“The public is also entreated to assist police with relevant information to recapture four suspected criminals who were detained in Somanya police cells, but were freed by the irate youth in the Monday incident.”
“They are Kwesi Danso, remanded for defrauding by false pretences; Kwesi Amoako, remanded for stealing; Nicholas Tetteh and Tetteh Damatey both of whom have been charged for stealing,” the statement from the police noted.
The police in its statement also assured that “adequate security measures have been put in place to forestall further breach of the peace in the area.”
The police service said it had deployed more police officers, including contingents of action units of the Formed Police Unit, SWAT and Counter Terrorism units to Somanya to maintain law and order.
The angry residents, earlier on Monday, vandalized the Somanya Police Station following the arrest of Ebenezer Jones Adamatey, the Assemblyman suspected to have led irate youth to attack the Somanya office of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) on Friday, May 26, over high electricity bills.
The police also announced it has arrested six persons in connection with the Monday incident to assist with investigations.
