The Ivory Coast President’s gesture is believed to be a reciprocation of an earlier action by his Ghanaian counterpart, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who visited the country on the 5th of May this year, as part of his tour of West African Countries.

The visit is reportedly aimed at deepening further, the already existing relations between the two countries, as well as exploring other areas of mutual co-operation.

Recall that Nana Addo, during the May visit, had revealed that Ghana and Ivory Coast are about taking their co-operation to a greater level through a new bilateral agreement tagged “An Agreement for a Strategic Partnership”.

This agreement, according to the Ghanaian President, will bind Ghana and Ivory Coast “in even closer intimacy and go beyond the bounds of the concept of the Permanent Joint Commission, which is the conventional tool for co-operation.” He has also disclosed that one of the major areas of interest in the new agreement is the cocoa industry.

President Akufo-Addo and Alassane Ouattara together with their respective teams, are expected to hold bilateral talks at the Flagstaff House on the first day of the latter’s visit to Ghana [Monday]. The two Presidents will later in the day, address a joint press conference after which President Akufo-Addo will host his Ivorian counterpart to an official dinner in the evening.

The Ivory Coast President is expected to leave Ghana for his country tomorrow being Tuesday, October 17. But before his departure, he will on behalf of his country, sign a bilateral agreement with Ghana.

The two countries, ably represented by their presidents, will also inaugurate a joint commission for the implementation of the recent judgement passed by the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) on the delimitation of the maritime boundaries of Ghana and Ivory Coast.
