National Chairman of the Convention People’s Party Professor Edmund Nminyem Delle says all the major policies of the current government are plans already set in motion by Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah while in government.
He said most of the projects of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo are projects on the brink of seeing the light of day until the overthrow of Ghana’s first president.
Prof Delle was speaking on TV3’s Midday Live on Saturday after exactly 52 years of the first coup d’etat in Ghana.
Dr Kwame Nkrumah’s government was overthrown on Thursday, February 24, 1966 while he was away in Hanoi, Vietnam.
The government was subverted by military and police officers led by Colonel Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka, Major Akwasi Amankwaa Afrifa and Lieutenant General Joseph Arthur Ankra.
The coup came with the banning of Kwame Nkrumah’s party, CPP, in the body politic of Ghana.
Fifty-two years after the epoch, Prof Delle believes the founder’s ideals still live on.
He mentioned the Zongo Development Fund, for instance, as a plan already conceived by Dr Nkrumah.
“You will see that he had a plan for the Zongos and he had even given compensation for the people of Nima to move [them] to Madina,” Prof Delle stated.
The current government – in its 2016 manifesto – promised to develop the Zongo communities across the country. This led to the formation of the Ministry of Inner City and Zongo Development as the New Patriotic Party claimed power.
The Zongo Development Fund Bill was assented to, together with four others including the Special Prosecutor Bill, by President Akufo-Addo on Tuesday, January 2.
Prof. Delle said the industrialization policy of the current government is same as what Dr Nkrumah planned.
The CPP National Chairman said conscious effort is being made to get the current generation to know more about the first president.
“We are now teaching [the youth] the history of the CPP,” he said.
According to him, the history was deliberately “destroyed” just to obliterate Kwame Nkrumah from the history of the country.
“I can tell you now that most of the positions now are the youth.”
