Ajax’s pre-season friendly against Werder Bremen was abandoned on Saturday after Abdelhak Nouri required emergency ambulance treatment on the field.
Nouri fell to ground unopposed after 73 minutes, with medics immediately rushing to his aid to provide emergency treatment for the 20-year-old.
CPR was administered on the young Dutchman, with a helicopter soon on the scene to airlift the player to hospital as the referee abandoned the match in Austria.
Ajax players were left visibly distraught by the incident, with some members of the squad close to tears as they awaited news on Nouri, who received emergency resuscitation.
An ambulance was swiftly on the scene as further CPR was given to the youngster, and after being flown away to hospital in a helicopter, supporters were asked to leave the stadium.
Nouri received 10 minutes of treatment on the pitch having initially remained conscious after falling, and he was still breathing when medical staff made their way onto the pitch.
Blue sheets were used to shield the fans from the distressing incident, with Nouri having come on at the start of the second half.
Ajax have given an update on Nouri’s health, with the player said to have suffered from arrhythmia. He is reported to be in a stable condition and being kept in an induced coma and in intensive care.
The Eredivisie outfit posted on Twitter in Dutch: ‘There was talk of heart rhythm disorders. He is stable, has heart rate and is asleep.
‘Nouri is now flown by helicopter to the hospital. Thanks so much for all your support.’
Ajax were trailing 2-1 when the incident took place, with Mateo Cassierra’s opener for the Dutch side cancelled out by strikes from Johannes Eggestein and Florian Kainz in the second half, though the scoreline was instantly overshadowed by Nouri’s condition.
He made 15 appearances for Ajax’s first-team last season, including three in the Europa League, and scored on his senior debut in a 5-0 win over Willem II in the KNVB-Beker.
Nouri is tipped to have bright future having been a regular in all of Holland’s youth teams, playing on 19 occasions for the country’s Under 19s.
