A fire outbreak at a portion of the Suame Magazine in Kumasi has left about nine vehicles burnt, several shops destroyed and about 350 squatters homeless.
Though personnel of the Ghana Fire Service are investigating the cause of the fire which started around 2:00am Tuesday at a spot called ‘Zone Nine’, the victims suspect electrical fault or rubbish burning in the area at the time.
This brings to two, the number of fire outbreaks recorded at the Suame Magazine this year. When TV3 news team arrived at the scene in the morning, victims were counting their losses.
A shop attendant , Mohammed Hakim said the fire which started small, spread to other parts by strong winds. He blamed the squatters for the fire.
Ashanti Regional Fire Commander, DCFO Semekor Kwaku Fiadzo, said they have intensified fire safety education to ensure the service achieves 2017 target of 60 per cent reduction of fire incidents in the Region.
“We will continue to extend our fire safety education to all homes ,markets and commercial places until we record zero preventable fire incidents,” he said.
