Eighty-seven selected Courts across the country will from Monday give litigants who have cases pending before the various Courts the opportunity to have it resolved through mediation.
The weeklong initiative by the Judicial Service of Ghana seeks to reduce the backlog of cases at the selected courts by 20 per cent, and forms part of programmes to mark this year’s Alternative Dispute Resolution.
Dubbed “Court-Connected ADR,” the concept aims at ensuring that access to justice in Ghana is made easier, cheaper, non-adversarial, expeditious and flexible to all, particularly the poor and vulnerable.
A total of 25 Circuit Courts and 62 District Courts selected for the programme would give litigants the chance to have all their cases, except criminal and election petitions, settled without going through the conventional trial.
This year’s ADR Week, themed: “Quality Justice: The Role of ADR”, will also create awareness on the availability of ADR as a compliment to the adjudication process in the Courts.
A statement issued by the Judicial Service urged the public and the Ghana Bar Association and litigants to participate and cooperate to make the initiative a success.
