The deceased, Captain Maxwell Mahama, an officer of the 5th Infantry Battalion is said to have been on his daily jogging routine on Monday [May 29], when some angry youth of the town attacked him, allegedly on suspicion of being an armed robber.

The accused are William Baah, Assemblyman and teacher, 36, farmer; Yaw Antwi, 32, farmer; Bismarck Donkor, 36, farmer; Kofi Badu, 29, farmer; Kofi Nyame, 29, farmer; Anthony Amoah, 23, Okada operator and Philip Badu, 30, a prison assistant.
The counsel for the accused, George Bernard Shaw, who spoke to journalists after the proceedings, said the police were obliged to bring them to court due to the statutory requirement of not keeping suspects in custody for more than 24 hours.
