Significant improvements have been noted in the 2017 BECE results as against what was obtainable in 2016.
The West African Examination Council has released results of the 2017 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
According to a statement from WAEC, the provisional results are now available at the Council’s official website – ghana.waecdirect.org. Interested candidates can access their individual results by logging on to the site and providing the required details.

The WAEC statement further disclosed that the council is still in the process of dispatching the authentic 2017 BECE results to various Junior High Schools across the country through the Municipal/District Directors of Education.
A total of 468,060 candidates sat for the 2017 BECE as against 460, 930 who sat for the exams in 2016. The increase represents a difference of 7,130 candidates which is a significant improvement.
The West African Examination Council noted that they released this year’s results 25 days earlier than those of 2016. Recall that WAEC released last year’s BECE results on the 13th of September, 2016.
In a similar vein, WAEC had also released the 2017 West African Senior School certificate Examinations (WASSCE) results about a month earlier than those of 2016.
Remarkable improvements were recorded in the overall conduct of the 2017 Basic Education Certificate Examination. This improvement resulted to the sniffing out of more cases of examination malpractices as well as a total avoidance of paper/question leakages..
Aside malpractices detected by the Item Differentia Profile (IDP) software in the objective tests, subject results of 1,298 candidates have been withheld. According to WAEC, the results will be released after the conclusion of investigations into the various cases of examination malpractice detected during and after the conduct of the examination.
It is also good to note that no paper leakages were recorded in the 2017 BECE. Although 2016 was said to have recorded no leakages too, there were slight hints of leakages here and there. But nothing was heard about the previously recurring menace this year.
WAEC indicated the stanine grading system was used for the BECE with “Grade 1” as the highest and “Grade 9” being the lowest.
The Stanine, fully known as the “Standard Nine” scoring is a system that grades scores on a nine-point scale. WAEC has proven it to be a better way of grading scores than the method previously in use.
Successful BECE candidates who are offered admission into the various public secondary schools in the country will benefit from government’s free SHS Programme which is expected to kick off at the beginning of the next academic session in September.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Education Service (GES), has made it clear that students who refuse their initial school placements will not benefit from the grant. The service has also promised they will not place candidates in schools outside the ones they have chosen.
