The Ghana National Team Coach, James Kwesi Appiah, is set to establish a solar equipment manufacturing plant in his home country, Ghana. The project which is targeted at producing solar panels for both domestic and industrial purposes will reportedly be carried out by the Black Stars coach with some of his business partners, at the cost of €14.5 million.
Considering the dire need for economic improvement as well as job creation in the country at the moment, the news has been received as a welcome development by one and all. Below are some of the good things about the proposed project.
1. He’s Setting it up in the Locality!
Kwesi Appiah’s solar factory is set to be established in Ashaiman, in the Greater Accra region of Ghana. The initiative has been welcomed by the Ashaiman’s municipal services, and according to myjoyonline.com report, the Municipal Assembly has already provided a 3.4 acre land for the construction of the solar factory, which is expected to take off February ending, 2018.
It has also been revealed that the land will serve as an equity to ensure that present and future generations of the municipality continuously benefited tremendously from the dividends of the factory.
The factory, which will be a subsidiary of the Appiah-Karim Company Ltd, will be set up in partnership with JVG-Thoma and Palmer Group Company, respectively based in Germany and the US. According to the Daily Graphic, the project is already being sponsored by the German government. It is believed that this foreign support will go a long way to facilitate the achievement of the initiative.
Speaking to Oman FM, the President of Palmer Group Company, George Palmer revealed that the partnering companies are also going to set up a full-fledged training facility which will train the youth in solar panel fabrication. They will also set up a marketing and service center to offer 24-hour services, he added.
It has been revealed that the Kwesi Appiah solar plant is expected to create at least 500 direct jobs for the youth of the Ashaiman Municipality. In addition to direct employment, the production of efficient solar panels would also go a long way to motivate the youth to establish small and medium scale enterprises, which will get them self-employed and possibly employ others in the future.
Moreover, large scale job creation which will be effected by the plant overtime, would also enhance revenue generation in the area and country at large.
Speaking to the Daily Graphic about the initiative, a consultant of the Appiah-Karim company, Mr Kwame Nti Karikari, said that the project is not only targeted at making power readily available for domestic usage but also to ensure that energy for factories across the country is made efficient and affordable.
As to why Appiah and Co chose Ashaiman, Mr. Palmer disclosed that they want to cut down the currently high rate of criminal activities in the municipality by getting majority of the unemployed youth engaged in meaningful occupation.
The solar factory will be the second laudable initiative Mr. Kwesi Appiah is embarking on since since his return to Ghana to coach the Black Stars this year. Recall that the second-time Ghana national team coach earlier in the year, set up a foundation to cater for retired Ghanaian sports personalities.
