Three people lost their lives in Kumasi while over 11, 193 others were displaced within three days through flooding, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has revealed.
The deceased were a six-month old baby, a 12 and 14 years old boys. They were submerged by flooding water while sleeping in their rooms, NADMO said.
Ashanti Regional Director of NADMO, Kwabena Senkyire, who revealed this on Onua FM’s Mantem Mpuntuo on Tuesday said the incident happened between June 3 and 5,2017.
The displaced, according to Mr Senkyire, slept in school buildings and in churches.
These floods “are not natural disaster but man made one”, Mr Senkyire stated.
Mr Senkyire who is also the Assemblyman for the Dichemso Electoral Area said the over 1,200 workers of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) are being paid but do not perform their mandate, something he said is partly causing the floods.
“The place [assemblies] have been turned into a politically dumping place where political parties dump their members there and that is not helping” he observed.
He warned that “if the assemblies do not do the right things, we shall force them to do it”.
