Danger looms at the Adenta Municipal Assembly Basic School as the only building complex housing classrooms and offices has developed cracks at several stalwarts. At least a thousand and a half pupils and about a hundred staff would not be spared should time release the disaster.
Critical investigation and checks by ATV’s crusading journalist, Akpagana-Kesedovo Logah revealed that appropriate authorities have neglected their role of maintaining the facility since 1995. The magnificent, multi-million building divided into more than 24 classrooms, libraries, laboratories, offices and lavatories is now glittering in decaying painting with sections turning pitch black by faulty sewage.
Such electrical fittings as switches, bulbs and cables are lying loosely in rather dangerously broken states. Aside from rooms at the last floor that are locked for use for the fear of collapse, the others beneath are congested by at least sixty pupils; four in each desk meant for at most two students.
All attempt to speak to the staff members proved futile as they fear being rebuked by the education authorities. A student who spoke to the reporter on the bases of anonymity says, the building vibrates and is highly felt at the basement, especially during their break times, “all the places in the school will be shaking if we are on break and we are walking or playing, we are always afraid the school will fall” the student said. “Because of that they moved the JHS pupils occupying the top floor to another place, the Mahama school, far away from here” he added.
A parent, Victoria Duah, who doubled as an executive member of the school’s PTA , on the other hand, is unhappy of the delay of the local assembly and the education directorate in arresting the time-bomb sown in the building, “they (G. E.S.) have, for the past weeks, moved the students but have done nothing as at now”, Miss Victoria said. She threatens, the community will close the school should the stakeholders fail to reduce the hazard in the next few days.
Meanwhile an information from the municipal assembly says the local authority is organizing yet another shareholders discussion to effect the arrest of the the looming disaster in the shortest possible time.
