Sarckess Music and TM Entertainmentz turned The Apollo Theatre upside down on Saturday night for the second installation of History In The Making concert. Sarkodie as always was the star of the show.
Setting aside a history of solid artistes that was an expectation amongst the concertgoers, the bill’s performing acts proved more than enough to sell out the spacious venue, as fans were excited to see EL, Lighter, The Compozers, Shatta Wale, Kwaw Kese, Jadiluc, 2 Shy, Squadee, Duke of D2, Bisa Kdei and finally by Nigerian top act Banky W.
But the moment Sarkodie walked on stage, it seemed that all previous artists were forgotten. The crowd had significantly filled out to see the Ghana’s most loved artiste – Sarkodie. The energized performer ran through hit after satisfying hit, bouncing around on stage.
Sarkodie made a point several times in the night to his 2000 concert audience to let them know how much he appreciated every single one of them and he appreciates that thet chose to spend the evening with him. Unfortunately, Joey B, Pappykojo, Efya, Ice Prince, Samini, Obrafour and others couldn’t make it due to reasons ranging from travel documents and schedules according to a post on Sarkodie’s Facebook page.
The show was hosted by Ghanaian actor, John Dumelo with music by DJ Mensah. The Apollo Theater is a venue noted for African-American performers. Renowned artistes who have performed at the Apollo Theatre include Michael Jackson among others. The event was seen as a test in an exciting way for the Ghanaian artists to reach out to a broader audiences and to enter into the American mainstream musical consciousness.
The show was featured in the New York Times with the title ‘Hiplife, a Sound Imported From Ghana, Arrives on a New York Stage’.
“The Apollo is really like a test in an exciting way for the Ghanaian artists to reach out to broader audiences and to enter into the American mainstream musical consciousness,” said Jesse Weaver Shipley, a professor of anthropology at Haverford College in Pennsylvania and the author of “Living the Hiplife: Celebrity and Entrepreneurship in Ghanaian Popular Music.”
The event was organized my TM Entertainment.
