Major news networks ABC News and CNN have projected that the Republican presidential candidate, Donald Trump is the winner in the state of Mississippi over Democrat Hillary Clinton, taking the state’s six electoral votes.
The state last backed a Democrat for president in 1976, voting Republican in every election since.
Mississippi’s GOP officials have heavily supported Trump. The billionaire businessman campaigned three times in the state, including a rare general-election visit tied to a Jackson fundraiser in August.
He won just short of half the votes in Mississippi’s Republican primary in March.
Clinton hadn’t campaigned in the state, but won more than 80 percent of the votes in Mississippi’s Democratic primary.
In 2012, nearly 1.3 million Mississippians voted for president.
