The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) Tuesday released data for all crimes recorded in the country in 2015.
Under various parameters, data has been classified to show how states and major cities fare on the crime graph. indianexpress.com accessed the data to figure out which cities could be classified as the most unsafe for women in the country.
To prepare the list, we took a look at two critical parameters – crime rate of rape cases against women in each city and the same for ‘assault on women with intent to outrage her modesty’. The latter section deals with sexual harassment cases, use of criminal force with intent to disrobe, voyeurism and stalking.
The cities listed below appear prominently in both indicators and are seen to record a high number of cases with respect to assault on women. NCRB has stated that the crime rate has been calculated using the female population in each city. It is to be noted that the cities are not listed in alphabetical order.
1. Jodhpur (Rajasthan)
This city in western Rajasthan that boasts of some of the most beautiful forts and palaces records high crime rate in both indicators. The city saw 152 rape cases against women and 440 cases of assault against women that included sexual harassment and voyeurism in 2015. The crime rate in both indicators was the highest in the country.
2. Delhi
The national capital is infamous for its record of safety of women. The NCRB data does not prove otherwise. With a total of 1,893 rape cases and 4,563 assault cases, Delhi is without doubt one of the most unsafe cities for women in the country.
Despite being a national capital and the centre of media attention, Delhi continues with its patchy safety record. The city is currently ruled by the Aam Aadmi Party, but its police force comes under the Home Ministry. There is a lot of wrangling between the Centre and the AAP government over the matter.
3. Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh)
With a crime rate of 10.4 in rape cases against women, Gwalior in the central state of Madhya Pradesh does not boast of a good record. 2014 figures of the NCRB also showed Gwalior among the top cities in the country figuring high in crimes against women. Gwalior recorded 188 cases of assault against women. The state is currently ruled by the Bharatiya Janata Party, which has had consecutive terms since 2002.
4. Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh)
Sinking the state of Madhya Pradesh in further shame is the presence of its capital city Bhopal in the list of most unsafe cities for women. The city, known for its pristine lakes and wide gardens, saw 133 rape cases and 322 cases of assault outraging the modesty of women. The crime rates were 7.1 and 17.1 respectively.
5. Nagpur (Maharashtra)
Nagpur, a surprise candidate in the list, recorded 166 rape cases and 392 assault cases against women in the year of 2015. The city in western Maharashtra with a population of 25 lakh has a worse crime record than bigger cities like Mumbai and Kolkata with larger population sizes. The police chief of the city had last year told reporters that efforts were being made to reduce crime in Nagpur.
6. Durg-Bhilainagar (Chhattisgarh)
This is an urban agglomeration combining the two cities of Durg and Bhilai in the state of Chhattisgarh. With a population of 10 lakhs, the city figured high in assault cases against women, NCRB data show. It had a crime rate of 16.4, just below cities like Bhopal and Gwalior.
Durg is the second-largest district in the state and the region is home to some of the biggest and prominent steel plants in the country.
