Gambia held its presidential elections on December 1 2016 where Adama Barrow shockingly defeated long-term incumbent Yahya Jammeh who has been in power for 22 years.
Yahyah Jammeh, before the results were announced, conceeded defeat to President-elect Adama Barrow. This caused lots of celebrations across the West African country.
On December 9, Yahyah Jammeh announced that he was rejecting the election results and called for a re-run.
Talks by fellow African leaders and world world organisations to convince him in rescinding his decision has since proven futile.
This development has provoked an unrest in Gambia characterized by violence and this is causing many to flee the country to seek refuge and solace in neighboring Senegal, the UN reports.
Gambia’s President-elect Adama Barrow is meeting with West African Leaders after mediation efforts to get incumbent Yahya Jammeh to step down failed.
President Jammeh took power through a military coup in 1994 and has since been in office.
