Presidential election polls closed at 17:00 GMT throughout the 1,422 polling stations in 53 constituencies in the seven administrative regions of The Gambia.
Barrow beat incumbent President Yahya Jammeh in the capital Banjul by nearly 50 percent.
Jammeh had 43 percent and the third party candidate Mama Kandeh got 7.6 percent of the vote.
AFP reports of heavy security deployment in the capital on Friday made up of military and police personnel with some wearing masks.
They are reported to have set up checkpoints every few hundred metres on the outskirts of the capital.
Internet and phone service were briefly resumed around 0500 GMT after they were shutdown Wednesday evening, AFP reports.
There were no reported incidents during the election and already, people are in the streets awaiting final results.
