Arsenal fans have identified many dream players over the years and the stringent times at Emirates Stadium which prevented Arsene Wenger from bringing in marquee signings are no longer the case – so who would be the perfect addition for the Gunners?
Marco Reus is a Germany international who has previously lauded the likes of Jack Wilshere and Tomas Rosicky for their technical abilities in midfield. The 27-year-old didn’t get an opportunity to showcase his talent on the biggest stage last summer after missing Euro 2016 with a groin injury.
The prodigious talent has once again been linked as a potential signing for Wenger’s men if one of their star players departs within the next year or so and it could happen sooner rather than later if the Frenchman gets his way.
Arsene Wenger will make a move for the Germany international if Alexis Sanchez decides to leave the Emirates. The Chilean has been linked with a tranfser away from the Gunners, and Wenger could bring in £50 million-valued Reus fill the void.
Reus would be the ideal signing for Arsenal if Alexis Sanchez – whose contract runs out in less than 18 months – decides to leave in 2017. He’s able to play across the forward line and likes to utilise his positional awareness by playing off the shoulder of defences.
Adding a player of Reus’ experience and calibre to the squad would improve Arsenal and give them another dimension in the final third. Alexis has flourished in the centre forward role so far this season but, should he leave for China or another top European club, the Gunners will need another player who can be deployed across the attack.
The rise in form and change of attitude where Theo Walcott is concerned will help Wenger’s men but surely a player of Reus’ quality would be impossible to turn down if they’re given the opportunity. Reus has scored four goals and bagged six assists in six games since his return from a long-term injury in November.
He would arrive with a hefty price tag and heaps of pressure on his shoulders, but if anyone can succeed in the Premier League it’s Reus. The injuries have been a problem over the last few seasons and he would work closely with Arsenal’s head of athletic performance enhancement, Shad Forsythe, who he also knows from the German national team.
Similarly, Mesut Ozil looks set to sign a new contact extension at the club and keeping him happy should be Arsenal’s main priority off the pitch this season. Bringing his national team pal and another world-class player into the squad would certainly go some way to achieving that.
