Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Henrikh Mkhitaryan will miss the EFL Cup final through injury.
But Michael Carrick is available and Wayne Rooney is set to be included in the squad.
Mkhitaryan limped off during the first half of Manchester United’s 1-0 win over St Etienne on Wednesday with a hamstring injury. And Sunday’s clash with Southampton will come too soon.
Carrick was forced off with a calf injury in France but the 35-year-old is fit.
Rooney didn’t travel for the Europa League tie in midweek. But after recovering from a muscle problem, the United captain is set to be in Mourinho’s 18-man squad at Wembley.
Mourinho said: “Michael is available. He was clever, he had the experience and left the pitch in right moment. So Michael is available. Mkhitaryan is out. Jones, let’s see and decide tomorrow.”
Mkhitaryan earlier admitted he was saddened to succumb to injury ahead of such a crucial match.
Mkhitaryan wrote on Instagram: “Back in the country where I spent an important part of my childhood. So happy to have scored tonight…but so sad to have left the pitch that early.”
