Left-wing filmmaker Michael Moore has announced the surprise release of a Donald Trump documentary weeks before the US election.
Moore surprised fans with a free screening of the new film, called Michael Moore In Trumpland, in New York on Tuesday night.
The documentary is based on his failed efforts to stage a one-man show about the Republican nominee in an Ohio theatre.
“See the film Ohio Republicans tried to shut down,” the synopsis reads.
Last month, Moore shared on Facebook that he was banned from performing and filming the show at a theatre in Ohio for being too controversial.
“I’m sure the good people who run this theatre are not, in their hearts, proud of what they’ve done and were certainly hoping their little act of censorship wouldn’t be known by anyone,” he wrote.
He then decided to shoot a secret documentary on the cancelled event.
Described as a “daring and hilarious one-man show”, the film had a one-hour introduction by Moore himself at its premiere at the IFC Center in Greenwich Village on Tuesday night.
“If you support Hillary Clinton and you’ve been doing this hands-on dance and celebrating her early victory, you’ve been helping to defeat her,” Moore told the crowd.
“Every time you felt good about how the debate went – or every stupid, ridiculous thing that Trump has done… it’s a dangerous position to take… There’s a long tradition of Americans electing people they weren’t going to elect,” he added.
Moore has a long tradition of making controversial documentaries.
One of his biggest hits, Fahrenheit 9/11, aimed to denounce the Bush administration’s ulterior motives for the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
However, Where To Invade Next, released last year, got mixed reviews and was a disappointment at the box office.
Michael Moore In Trumpland will hit cinemas just weeks before the 8 November election, as scores of celebrities continue to show their support for Mrs Clinton.
Moore, however, has always been critical of Mrs Clinton, pointing out her role in the Iraq War and her ties to Wall Street.
Now he has shifted his support – but left a warning.
“If she doesn’t keep her promises,” he said, “next time, I’ll run for president myself.”
