Leicester City boss Claudio Ranieri has admitted that his side are now in a relegation scrap following their 2-1 loss to fellow Premier league strugglers Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.
The reigning Premier League champions are now just two points off of the relegation zone after a poor start to the season which has seen them lose seven of their opening 14 matches as title defenders, and according to the Mirror, the Italian coach is wary that his side are fighting for their top flight survival this season, but struggled to explain why this was the case.
“I think now there are a lot of teams involved in the battle at the bottom,” said Ranieri.
“Everything last season was right. Starting with luck – this season everything is wrong.
“I think we play at the same level in the Premier League as the Champions League.
“In the Premier League, the first chance or mistake, the opponent scores. In the Champions League, it’s different. Maybe the opponent misses and we score.
“Now, we must continue to work hard and maintain the right balance. We must believe in ourselves.
“That’s the sport. There are good and bad moments. In bad moments, we must stay together – and we are.”
Should the the Foxes fail to maintain their league status, they will become only the second club in the history of English football to be relegated the season after winning the league, and Ranieri will be keen for his side to transfer their confidence of their European adventure into their league form if they wish to play top flight football next season.
