Jose Mourinho is looking to boost his attacking options with the signing of Arsenal and England forward Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from bitter rival Arsene Wenger. The Manchester United manager is said to be keeping a close eye on the 23 year-old who has struggled for form this season at the Emirates.
As reported by the ?Mirror, Mourinho is willing to offer £30m for the services of Chamberlain as he believes he can revitalise his stuttering career. The former Southampton winger has only scored two Premier League goals this season and is finding it difficult to cement a first-team place under Wenger.
Oxlade-Chamberlain fits the profile of a Mourinho star and he is planning to exploit the confusion over Arsene Wenger’s future— Christian (@chrisjec74) February 18, 2017
It’s not clear at this stage if the confusion over the Frenchman’s own future will prove pivotal in any decision to let any of the first team depart, but Chamberlain will be frustrated with his development in north London and now might be the time he genuinely considers a fresh start.
From an Old Trafford perspective, United have let Memphis Depay and Morgan Schneiderlin leave in the recent January transfer window so bringing in another addition or two will be a summer priority. Mourinho will be keen to add another English player and the Ox will fit the bill perfectly.
However, one major factor in stumping Chamberlain’s development is his proneness to injury. So often it has proven his downfall since signing for the club in 2011 but even when he has been fit, Wenger is always coy about giving him a lengthy run of games.
There’s no saying that Chamberlain will just walk into United’s first XI, if anything he’d need to prove himself over a period of time to catch the eye of Mourinho who with the right guidance, could turn Chamberlain into a proven player for both club and country.
