Luis Garcia expects Steven Gerrard’s coaching career to carry him into the managerial hot-seat at Liverpool, with an Anfield legend tipped to start climbing the ladder. Having called time on his illustrious playing days, the former Reds captain is taking his first tentative steps away from the field.
His return to Merseyside in a coaching capacity has already been confirmed, with Liverpool eager to put his vast experience and affinity for the club to good use.To start with, Gerrard will be working with the club’s academy ranks – helping to mould the stars of tomorrow.
Luis Garcia, though, believes it is only a matter of time before an iconic figure is drafted into the first-team set-up and eventually lands the top job currently filled by Jurgen Klopp.
The 2005 Champions League winner, speaking exclusively to 888sport, said: “Having Stevie around the academy will be a big boost because he is a very important character for Liverpool.I’m sure everyone at the club is very happy to have him there and I cannot see why he will not be the manager one day. He’s getting his badges with young players. Why not? We will see in a couple of years, first as an assistant coach and then manager. We’ve seen it before.”
While he will be spending much of his time with Liverpool’s young hopefuls, Gerrard will still be on hand to offer advice to those who come looking for it
Luis Garcia believes Jordan Henderson could be among those to benefit from the presence of the ex-England skipper, with the 26-year-old having already inherited the Anfield armband, and a leadership role in the middle of the park.
The Spaniard added: “Even though they didn’t play the same position, with Stevie more of a box to box player, right now I can see Henderson dictating the tempo and that’s what he took from Stevie.
“How to move a team with his passes – and he has a fantastic pass – and be the second line and score important goals.”
