Michael J Fox says he often “can’t stop laughing” at his inability to perform everyday tasks due to the symptoms of his Parkinson’s disease.
The Back to the Future actor was diagnosed with the neurological disease, which causes a person’s movements to become slow and imprecise, 26 years ago.
But speaking to AARP magazine he said he found the symptoms more funny than upsetting.
In the interview Fox described carrying a cup of coffee to his wife Tracey and, after spilling most of it, telling her: “Here’s your coffee, dear – enjoy!”
“The truth is that on most days, there comes a point where I literally can’t stop laughing at my own symptoms,” he said.
“The thing that makes it hilarious to me is when I think of someone else watching all this and thinking, ‘Poor Michael can’t even get the coffee – it’s so sad’.”
The 55-year-old actor publicly revealed his condition in 1998 and has been open about his experience of the disease.
In 2013 he starred in the Michael J Fox Show playing a newsreader with Parkinson trying to rebuild his career.
Fox said once he’d revealed his condition he had to deal with “people’s perception of the condition” as well as the disease itself.
“It was easy for me to tune in to the way other people were looking into my eyes and seeing their own fear reflected back,” he told the magazine.
“I’d assure them that ‘I’m doing great’ – because I was.
“After a while, the disconnect between the way I felt and the dread people were projecting just seemed, you know, funny.”
In the interview the star also warned against cuts to Obamacare, saying people with Parkinson’s disease face annual bills of up to $17,000 (£13,600).
“If the Affordable Care Act and even Medicare come under the knife that’s not political.
“That’s our lives”, he said.
