Being a celebrity has many perks, but one thing celebs may or may not love is the public scrutiny over their style.
However, thanks to top celebrity stylists like Kate Young, Petra Flannery, and Cristina Ehrlich, who consistently top the Hollywood Reporter‘s annual list of the most powerful Hollywood stylists, celebrity style has transformed for the better. But even nontraditional stylists like Kanye West have made a momentous impact on celebrities’ style (we’re looking at you, Kim K.).
With the Golden Globes behind us, Fashion Month in full swing, and the Oscars on Sunday night, we looked at the major style transformations of four celebrities through the years: Kim Kardashian, Lena Dunham, Selena Gomez, and Emma Stone.
Kim Kardashian, before and after Kanye West
Although Kanye West isn’t technically a stylist, he has been credited with enhancing Kim’s style tremendously since the two began dating in 2012.
During Kim’s pre-Kanye years, she was famous not for her Vogue-approved style but for her friendship with celebs like Paris Hilton, small stints on shows like America’s Next Top Model and Dancing With the Stars — oh, and for a certain tape featuring Kim and former flame Ray J.
Back then, Kim’s style consisted of pointed-shoulder blazers, skintight leather pants, and foundation about three shades darker than she wears now.
Eventually, her style evolved to a more sophisticated, fashion-forward look, seen here in a chic velvet jumpsuit and then a stylish pinstriped dress paired with white booties.
Lena Dunham, before and after Cristina Ehrlich
It’s hard to believe that Girls premiered five years ago in 2012. Since then, Lena’s style has gone through a major metamorphosis.
Back then, she wore a hodgepodge of prints and patterns, as shown here by her tights and dresses. Today, Lena’s style still possesses a quirky sensibility, but it is much more refined, as shown here by her form-fitting blazer, chic leopard slides, and Chanel bag.
Most recently, she rocked a slick ponytail, a metallic disco-style outfit, and hot-pink eye shadow, all thanks to her new stylist, Cristina Ehrlich. Ehrlich’s clientele also includes Lena’s co-star Allison Williams, as well as Margot Robbie and Anna Kendrick.
Selena Gomez, before and after Kate Young
Selena has grown from adorable Disney starlet to stunning young star with the most followed Instagram account of 2016. Clearly, Selena’s style has grown as her acting and singing careers flourished.
She used to wear little ’80s-style satin cocktail dresses with puffy sleeves but slowly began rocking red carpet stunners like this gorgeous crimson gown from red-hot New York designers Cushnie et Ochs at the Grammys last year.
And of course, we can’t forget Selena’s major Louis Vuitton moment at the Met Gala in 2016. Kate Young has transformed Selena’s youthful style to one of a standout fashionable woman. No wonder she’s No. 1 on the Hollywood Reporter list.
Emma Stone, before and after Petra Flannery
During Emma Stone’s early career, she was the adorable redheaded actress who starred in comedic films like Superbad and Zombieland, but now she’s become an Oscar-nominated actress for her recent performance in La La Land.
Emma’s style story began with simple minidresses with strappy shoes — simple and cute, though not especially fashionable. But through the help of stylist Petra Flannery, Emma is now consistently listed as one of the best-dressed on the red carpet year to year.
Take, for example, her drop-dead-gorgeous, starry Valentino Haute Couture dress she wore to the Golden Globes. Flannery has transformed Stone’s style to one of a classic, elegant Hollywood actress. We can’t wait to see what she wears to the Oscars this Sunday.
