This news will come as a real blow to Afrobeat musician Femi Kuti, the eldest son of pioneer Fela Kuti, who was left with a sour taste in his mouth this weekend after thinking he had broken a world record for the longest single note played on a wind instrument.
The Nigerian star held a single note on his saxophone for 46 minutes and 38 seconds at a gig in Lagos – a feat achieved by circular breathing, a technique whereby you breathe in continuously through your nose while sustaining the tone of a note.
He thought the note was enough to beat a 45-minute record set by Kenny G – much loved by MOR mums the world over – in 1997.
However, the record is actually held by Vann Burchfield, who, in 2000, held a note for 47 minutes and 5.5 seconds.
Femil has taken the news extremely well however.
‘No wahala’, means roughy ‘no problem’.
If this is so, then like I’ve said we will work to achieve the 50min mark . No wahala???? I believe I’ve still got a bit more energy in my tank https://t.co/3sMJiDP7bz— Femi Anikulapo -Kuti (@Femiakuti) May 8, 2017
