Edward Enninful has been named the new editor of British Vogue.
He becomes the first black male editor of the magazine, and takes over from Alexandra Shulman who was in charge for 25 years.
The 44-year old will start his new role on August 1, 2017.
The announcement was made Monday, April 10 by Jonathan Newhouse, Condé Nast International Chairman and Chief Executive Officer who described Enninful as “an influential figure in the communities of fashion, Hollywood and music which shape the cultural zeitgeist’ and said that ‘by virtue of his talent and experience, Edward is supremely prepared to assume the responsibility of British Vogue.”
Enninful’s previous role was at W Magazine as a Fashion and Style Director where he has been since 2011.
He was born in Ghana but moved to London at a very young age with his parents and five siblings. His mother worked as a seamstress, and inspired him with the vividly patterned colors and fabrics she used while creating clothing for her British-Ghanaian friends.
At the age of 16, Enninful was spotted on the train by Stylist Simon Foxton: “I was 16 and I had no idea who Simon Foxton was,” he said in an interview for Telegraph Magazine. “About two weeks later I was stopped again, this time by a model scout. When I told her that I’d already been approached by Simon Foxton, she told me how amazing he was and weeks later I was shooting with him at his house, along with Nick Knight, a founder-photographer of i-D.”
He started assisting the publication, making him one of the youngest Fashion Director for an international publication at the age of 18.
He has since worked for Italian Vogue, American Vogue and W Magazine, and consulted on fashion campaigns for brands including Calvin Klein, Christian Dior and Dolce and Gabbana
Enninful was awarded an OBE – Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire by the British mornachy for his contributions to fashion.
He also won Isabella Blow Award for Fashion Creator at the 2014 British Fashion Awards.
