The channel will air some English Premier League matches at no cost
Econet Group has launched a free sports channel – Kwese Free Sports – in Kenya, in its latest expansion plans. The channel under its subsidiary – Econet Media – will air some English Premier League matches at no cost, available on any free-to-air set-top box.
It will also air one live EPL match every Saturday (game of the week), a decision aimed at clipping DSTV’s market in Kenya. Econet Media has signed a deal valid for the 2016-17 and 2018-19 EPL seasons and acquired broadcasting rights in sub-Saharan Africa.
Kwese will also air America’s National Basketball Association and National Football League games. Speaking in Nairobi during the launch, Kwese general manager Monicah Ndung’u said the company is developing local content.
“Nobody is giving free premier local and international content so we identified the niche’ and decided to fill the gap. We are engaging producers for more content,” she said.
