Jose Mourinho has never finished a full campaign, with any of the clubs he has managed, outside of the top three.
So the fact that Manchester United currently sit sixth in the Premier League table, six points short of the top four and eight adrift table toppers Liverpool, will be of some concern to the Portuguese.
After a winning start to the campaign, which was halted with a home defeat to local rivals Manchester City in early September, Mourinho’s side have struggled to put together the consistency that will help to return the club to its former glory days.
Mourinho is the third manager in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era. But while he may have won a trophy in his first game in charge – a 2-1 Community Shield victory over Premier League champions Leicester City – a season without a top-four finish or silverware will be met with a disgruntled reception.
However, Didier Drogba – who worked with the United boss during his time at Chelsea – has backed his former boss to get the Red Devils seriously competing for silverware again, given the patience of both the fans and the club’s bosses.
