protest at not having access to classrooms
Students at a school in the Eastern cape province of South Africa studied in the middle of a road in protest at not having access to newly built classrooms.
The students Mdeni Senior Secondary School blockaded the otherwise busy road, claiming that contractors hired to build new classrooms at the school had refused to hand over the keys to the classrooms.
The contractors in turn blamed the Eastern Cape education department for failing to pay them for their work.
The Eastern Cape education department eventually intervened and after engaging the contractors, they obtained the keys to the classrooms. The students then ended their peaceful protest.
The incident has drawn outrage from the South African public, with many accusing the Eastern Cape provincial government of neglecting rural schools.
