The British Embassy in Turkey will be closed on Friday for security reasons, the British Foreign Office (FCO) announced.
A statement by the FCO did not specify what the security threat was, however, the closure comes after Germany closed its embassy, consular officers and a school on Wednesday, fearing an elevated security risk during the Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha.
The FCO reiterated to Britons in Turkey not to travel to within 10 km of Turkey’s border with Syria and to the city of Diyarbakir and avoid any non essential trips to the territory near or at the Iraqi border.
Turkey is on high alert for extremist attacks, since a series of deadly explosions in Ankara and elsewhere over the last year, as well as an attempted military coup in July.
