Things are looking up for Arsenal after some last-gasp Panenka-ing heroics from Alexis Sanchez the Gunners are still within touching distance of pacesetters Chelsea in the Premier League title race.
Wenger himself might not be around to see it as he waits to find out of his bout of extra-curricular on the sidelines last weekend costs him a spot on the touchline for the next few games.
Expect Wenger to be asked about that, all the latest team news, any lingering transfer news and, of course, what is happening with Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil this week.
Wenger defends Xhaka
Arsene Wenger has jumped to the defence of Swiss midfielder Granit Xhaka.
Xhaka is facing a four game ban after his sending off against Burnley and is also accused of racially abusing an airport worker at Heathrow.
But Wenger, who confirmed he has requested a personal hearing to his own FA misconduct charge, says Xhaka denies the airport incident and also told his midfielder to improve his tackling.
Gunners boss Wenger said: “There’s two incidents – the sending off was harsh. It was not a dangerous tackle, it was a clumsy tackle.
Unfortunately we will lose him for four games.
“I don’t think he’s a natural tackler. He doesn’t master tackling, I’d encourage him to stay on his feet. You can improve it but it’s better to stay up.
“He denies completely what happened at Heathrow. I’ve spoken to him about it and he completely denies it.
“He’s been absolutely marvellous to handle on a daily basis – commitment, dedication. I’ve never had a problem with him.”
Wenger will accept FA charge
Arsene Wenger will accept a Football Association misconduct charge after being sent from the touchline in Sunday’s Premier League win over Burnley.
The Frenchman was sent to the stands by referee Jon Moss after allegedly using abusive or insulting language towards fourth official Anthony Taylor after an injury-time penalty was awarded to the Clarets.
Wenger then tried to watch the remainder of the contest from the entrance to the tunnel and was shown pushing Taylor, who was asking him to retreat.
Arsenal went on to win the game 2-1 after being awarded an even later penalty of their own, but Wenger was charged on Monday and revealed ahead of the Gunners’ FA Cup fourth-round tie at Southampton that he will not contest the decision.
When asked if he would accept the charge, he replied: “Yes, I answered that in the press conference, I have little more to add. I am big enough to stand up for what I do.
“When I don’t behave like I think I should behave, I am big enough to say I am not right.
“I’m a passionate guy and I believe that I am completely committed in my job and want to win the football games.”
… on Gnabry
There has been talk Serge Gnabry could return to the Emirates.
So, Arsene?
“We’ve sold Gnabry definitely to Bremen,” he said.
“At the time it looked like Bayern were behind it but at the moment we’re not resigning him.”
… on team’s battling qualities
Arsenal showed battling qualities to beat Burnley this weekend and Wenger was pleased with what he saw.
“This team has shown qualities that are very important.
“We are relentless, we keep going.
“We have produced more goals in the final five minutes than anyone else.
“There’s a great unity in this team.”
… on his punishment
“I have said what I think I have to say publicly.
“I don’t know if I will be punished and how I will be punished.
“If I am punished, when I was sent off I was surprised.”
… on his punishment
“I have said what I think I have to say publicly.
“I don’t know if I will be punished and how I will be punished.
“If I am punished, when I was sent off I was surprised.”
“We are not on the verge of signing anything,” he says.
On Debuchy:
“Gabriel has been convincing on the right side but I don’t close the door. He’s fully fit now and available to play”
On Jenkinson:
Only he has to agree personal terms but at the moment he has not managed to do that”
“There’s two incidents that have been talked about.
“Watching it again the sending off was harsh.
“It was not a dangerous tackle, it was a clumsy tackle. He has to learn from it, I don’t think he wanted to injure anybody but he has to learn from it.
“We lose him for four games now at an important time. He denies completely the other incident at Heathrow, I have spoken to him about it.
“I can only say about him since the start, he has a fantastic attitude. He has been absolutely marvellous.
“Focus, dedication and we never have a bad noise about him.”
“He is naturally not a great tackler and in his decision making. It is more the way he tackles that is not convincing.
“I would encourage him not to tackle, to stay on his feet.
“Tackling is a technique that you learn at a young age but when you are face to face you stand up.”
Southampton come fresh from turning Liverpool over last night.
“Southampton are on a high, a fantastic performance last night.
“It makes it more difficult and interesting.”
The Arsenal boss has arrived – and it’s team news first up.
“Walcott back in the squad and of course we lose Xhaka who is suspended.
“Good news is that Mertesacker & Debuchy back in full training tomorrow.
“I have not decided yet completely who will play and not play.
“We’ll put a team with first team experience in there with maybe one or two younger players in there.”
