Arsenal topped their group to qualify for the next stage of the champions league
Hundreds of Arsenal fans have been left stranded in Switzerland following reports of a light aircraft crash at Basel Airport.
The airport was closed after the Piper Pa-34 HB-Lsd from Nuremberg crashed after attempting to land in dense fog on Wednesday afternoon.
Arsenal supporters, many of whom had stayed overnight in Switzerland, were stuck in the middle of huge delays less than 24 hours after the Gunners topped their Champions League group with a 4-1 win over Basel.
“This flight from Basel to London Stansted has been delayed due to the temporary closure of the runway at Basel Airport,” said in a statement posted by Ryanair.
“Customers have been provided with refreshment vouchers in the terminal and will board the aircraft to depart to London once the airport runway reopens.”
Gunners fans were reportedly struggling to find available hotel rooms in close proximity to the airport while other reports suggested the light aircraft only just missed a British Airways flight preparing to leave its gate back to London.
