A 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck New Zealand’s South Island at 6 a.m. ET on Sunday.
An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 struck 91 kilometres north-northeast of the city of Christchurch, New Zealand just after 6 a.m. ET, the U. S. Geological Survey said.
Christchurch is the biggest city on New Zealand’s South Island. A 6.3 quake there in February 2011 killed 185 people and caused widespread damage.
The U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no tsunami threat from Monday’s quake, but on social media many people are posting about multiple aftershocks.
The extent of the damage from the quake is not yet known.
The U.S. Geological Survey is reporting that two aftershocks have reached magnitudes of 6.2 and 5.7.
