It is with a heavy heart that we report the death of Dr Sheikh Umar Khan, Sierra Leone’s leading virologist in the battle against the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD).
He died under the care of the international aid group Doctors Without Borders who were fighting to save his life.
Dr Khan is credited with treating over a 100 Sierra Leoneans who had been infected with the hemorrhagic fever.
Dr Umar Khan contracted the virus in the course of caring for other EVD patients in Sierra Leone. Although he was aware that he was at a significant risk of contracting the infection, Dr Khan continued to assiduously provide care to the infected population.
The doctor’s selfless act has made him a national hero in Sierra Leone, and he will go down in the annals of Sierra Leone’s medical history as a true patriot
Approximately 700 West African’s have died from the disease, which has no vaccine or cure.
The current EVD outbreak in West Africa has a 60% mortality ratio, which is less than the 90% mortality ratio that has been experienced in previous epidemics.
For those who have been infected, they have been treated with a regiment that requires replacement of electrolytes.
Our heart goes out to all the families who have lost loved ones over the course of the spread of the epidemic. We look forward in solidarity with the entire globe and with an unflinching hope towards an end to this humanitarian health crisis.
