Nigeria’s health officials have confirmed 10 cases of Ebola in Africa’s most populous country.
Of the 10 confirmed cases, 2 of the infected patients have died from the disease. The two deceased include the American-Liberian consultant who received emergency care after he collapsed at Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport upon his arrival in Nigeria from Liberia and the nurse who cared for him.
Mr. Patrick Sawyer, the American-Liberian consultant is believed to be the source of infection for 7 of Nigeria’s reported cases. At this time, there is however no evidence of a link between the other cases and Mr. Patrick Sawyer; Nigeria’s patient zero of the Ebola outbreak.
Nigeria’s Health Ministry’s confirmation of the 10 cases will help to dispel other false reports, which have exaggerated the number of incident cases in Nigeria. The false reports have created mass hysteria in an anxious population.
There are however an additional 70 Nigerian residents under surveillance.
The Nigeria government has declared a state of emergency across the country and has increased its efforts to contain the spread of the virus and ensure early detection of new cases. Various states in the Federal Republic of Nigeria have also set up and commissioned treatment and isolation centers to supplement the efforts of existing health institutions.
In the last few days, Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan has also approved a provisional $11.7 million emergency fund to bolster the efforts of the country’s health workers.
The Center of Disease Control is working with the Nigerian government’s health ministry to ensure that the country is better equipped to deal with this growing epidemic.
The Nigerian government has no plans at this time to close its borders as a measure to contain the spread of Ebola virus
